Item Description

The Xikuangshan Deposit in China is the largest antimony deposit in the world according to the entry on mindat.org. This area hosts four different orebodies, and only two of them have actually been exploited. Xikuangshan is best known for its world-class Stibnites, which are incredibly large and fine for the species. This piece is a fantastic, large cabinet display specimen featuring a predominant, thick, striated, metallic, silvery, splendent crystal, associated with a few additional Stibnites on the lower portion, and no matrix. Some of the crystals are slightly "bent" which is a fairly common phenomenon for Stibnite, but rarely seen in other minerals. There are some areas of roughness, so the piece is not completely pristine, but to find a euhedral, terminated crystal that measures well over 6 inches is remarkably rare for Stibnite, and the crystal is notably thick for the species, as I've seen longer crystal, but they are typically much more narrow/thin. A dramatic and impressive example of this now rarely seen material, which was much more prevalent on the market a couple decades ago. Valued $3,500.
From the collection of the beloved mineral dealer and collector Rock H. Currier (1940-2015) who was the long-time owner of Jewel Tunnel Imports (named after the large open vugs in basalt in India which were often filled with crystals). Collection #40572. Rock travelled the world in search of mineral specimens, and built and impressive collection over his lifetime. He was one of the more colorful and unforgettable figures in the mineral world.
